What Happens If Your Ham License Expires?

Amateur radio licenses expire ten years from their grant date. If you do not renew before the expiration date, your license enters Expired status and your operating privileges are suspended. Here is exactly what happens when a ham license expires, and what you can do about it.

What "Expired" Means Operationally

An expired amateur radio license is no longer valid for transmitting. You may not operate on any amateur frequency with an expired license — doing so is an FCC violation. The license record still exists in the ULS showing your name, call sign, and the notation that the status is Expired, but it does not authorize any operation.

Receiving (listening) on amateur frequencies without a license is perfectly legal — the licensing requirement applies only to transmitting. An operator who has let their license expire can still listen, still participate in club activities, and still prepare for renewal.

The Two-Year Grace Period

After expiration, the FCC provides a two-year grace period during which you can file a late renewal without retesting. To renew during the grace period:

• Log into the FCC ULS
• Navigate to your expired license
• File the renewal application (the same process as a timely renewal)
• No exam is required
• No late fee is assessed

Once the renewal is processed, your license is restored to Active status with a new ten-year term from the original expiration date.

After the Grace Period

If two years pass after the expiration date without a renewal application, the FCC cancels the license. Once cancelled, your call sign is released to the available pool and can be reassigned to another operator. You lose your call sign and must pass the applicable exam again to get a new license.
