FCC Amateur Radio License Classes
The FCC issues amateur radio licenses in several classes. Each class grants different operating privileges. Browse active operators by class below.
The highest amateur radio license class, granting all amateur privileges on all frequency bands. Requires passing a 50-question written exam covering regulations, operating practices, and electronics theory.
A legacy class (no longer issued) that grants more privileges than General but fewer than Extra. Valid Advanced licenses remain in force until their expiration date.
The intermediate class, granting HF privileges on most amateur bands. Requires passing a 35-question exam. A popular upgrade from Technician for operators interested in long-distance HF communication.
The entry-level license class, granting privileges primarily on VHF and UHF bands. Requires passing a 35-question exam. No Morse code requirement. The most common starting point for new operators.
A legacy entry-level class (no longer issued). Novice licenses granted limited HF and VHF privileges. Valid Novice licenses remain in force until expiration.
