How to Set Up a Home Ham Radio Station After Getting Licensed
Your first home ham radio station doesn't need to be complicated or expensive. Here's a practical guide to getting on the air after passing your exam.
Passing your amateur radio exam is exciting, but the immediate question for most new licensees is: what do I do now? Setting up a functional home station is the natural next step, and it does not require a large budget or complex installation. Here is a practical guide to getting on the air.
Start with Your Goal
What do you want to do with your license? The answer shapes your equipment choices:
- Local VHF/UHF via repeaters: An inexpensive handheld radio (HT) and a home antenna gets you there for under $100
- HF (General/Extra class): A multi-band HF transceiver and a wire antenna are the foundation
- Digital modes: Any modern transceiver with a computer audio interface
- Emergency communications: A dual-band VHF/UHF mobile radio in the car or a well-equipped home station
Entry-Level Equipment for Technicians
For most new Technicians, the starting point is a dual-band (2m/70cm) handheld radio. Popular options include the Yaesu FT-65, Kenwood TH-D74, or Icom ID-51A. Budget options like the Baofeng UV-5R work but have limitations. Add a dual-band J-pole or ground-plane antenna at home for better range than the rubber duck antenna.
Getting on HF (General and Extra)
The entry point for HF is a multi-band transceiver like the Icom IC-7300, Yaesu FT-991A, or Kenwood TS-590SG. These radios cover 160 meters through 10 meters and include built-in antenna tuners. For an antenna, a simple wire dipole cut for 20 meters is an excellent starting point — inexpensive, effective, and can be installed in most yards or balconies.
Antenna Considerations
Antenna restrictions are the most common constraint for new home station operators. If you own your home, the FCC's PRB-1 ruling generally prevents homeowners' associations from completely prohibiting amateur antennas (with reasonable restrictions allowed). Renters face more challenges and often use compromise antennas or remote stations.
