What Is a Radio Club and How Do They Get Licensed by the FCC?

Amateur radio clubs can hold their own FCC licenses separate from individual members. Here's the club licensing process and what it means for the club.

Amateur radio clubs are organized groups of licensed operators who gather around shared interests in the hobby — contesting, DXing, emergency communications, technical experimentation, or simply community. Most active clubs hold their own FCC-issued club call sign, which becomes the collective identity for the group's station.

Requirements for a Club License

To qualify for an FCC amateur radio club license, the organization must meet minimum requirements:

  • At least four members who hold individual amateur radio licenses
  • An officer structure with defined roles (president, secretary, etc.)
  • A designated trustee who holds a valid individual amateur radio license
  • A fixed address for the club station (the control point)
  • An organizational name

The Trustee's Role

The trustee is the individual who takes personal FCC responsibility for the club's station. The trustee's personal call sign and license information appear in the club's license record. If the trustee's individual license expires or is cancelled, the club's license may be affected — the club must designate a new trustee with a current license.

Club Call Sign Formats

Club stations are eligible for shorter call sign formats than individual Technician or General licensees. This is one of the reasons many clubs value their call sign highly — a short 1x2 or 2x1 call is easier to use on-air and more distinctive. Some clubs have held the same call sign for decades.

Club Station Operations

A club station license allows the club's station to be operated by any licensed amateur radio operator who is a member of the club, under the trustee's authorization. During Field Day, public service events, and club nets, the club call sign is used rather than individual operators' personal call signs. This creates a unified identity for the club's radio activities.
